It has seemingly grown stronger and more expressive over the “Springsteen on Broadway” and lockdown period of the last few years. It’s soul music for the Boss to better frame his voice, which, in his 73rd year, he’s found a new appreciation for. The legendary Sam Moore of Sam and Dave fame sings on the new Springsteen version, and Moore’s also on the album’s “Soul Days.” The song was re-interpreted by New Brunswick R&B star Jaheim in 2002 for the hit “Put That Woman First.” So is the gem “I Forgot to Be Your Lover,” originally by William Bell. The Walker Brothers’ baroque soul classic “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore,” originally written for Frankie Valli by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio, is also on the new album. The title track comes from a classic Jerry Butler song from the 1968 album, “The Ice Man Cometh.” The album transitioned the Chicago legend from a pop R&B hitmaker to a mature soul stirrer during the era’s Black Power movement.Ī second “Ice Man Cometh” song, “Hey, Western Union Man,” is included on Springsteen’s “Only the Strong Survive.” Soul and Motown standards - including “I Wish it Would Rain” by the Temptations, “Someday We’ll Be Together” by Diana Ross and The Supremes, and the Four Tops’ “When She Was My Girl” - are included on the new album, as well as a few interesting diversions. The Springsteen version is included on the upcoming “Only the Strong Survive,” an album of soul covers, due Friday, Nov.
